We sat down with Brandon Karp, Vog’s Lead Developer to discuss why he chose programming as a vocation, what he’s enjoying about working with Vog, and what fulfills him.
So Brandon, you’ve been down the road of development for awhile now, to the point where you lead teams on large projects. Did you ever see yourself getting here and more importantly, what drew you to becoming a developer in the first place?
BRANDON: I honestly love technology, new tech, and the digital industry as a whole because I’ve always loved seeing the latest and greatest things that are happening in technology, being on the vanguard if you will, and how it’s being used in life and businesses.
For example, I just upgraded my phone to the Note 20 Ultra, not because I needed it, but because I love what it is capable of. I can play Xbox on it! Come on, how cool is that? Another example is with a company called Gravity who’s working on actual jetpacks. All of this stuff is cutting edge, changing lives, and shaping the way forward, and being a developer allows me to be a small piece of that innovation. It’s an incredible feeling.
It seems that fulfillment plays a big part of your passion for technology and development. What would you say is the most fulfilling part of your job right now?
BRANDON: I would say the most fulfilling part of what I do, and honestly what I love most, is investing in my team’s forward momentum. I know it’s sappy, but it’s genuinely an incredible feeling seeing each piece, each part, each person become a better problem solver every day.
Organizing them, building them up, and turning their minds loose on a project. I love being part of the design, development, and the problem solving aspect of these projects with them and experiencing those “AHA!” lightbulb moments with them as we tackle different challenges in a project.
With those big projects in mind, where do you hope to see VOG in the next 5 years and what kind of projects would you like to see Vog become a part of?
BRANDON: I would say that with Vog’s constant growth and involvement with so many unique projects beyond industry trends, I can it becoming a natural part of our expansion to explore some sort of Research and Development branch of our company.
The people here think so far above and beyond me that it would almost seem a waste not to put them on something extremely cutting edge to share with the world. We have a lot of internal ideas already and I just hope to be a part of them.
